An independent guide to a town on a rock
We are readers and slow travellers, not the town hall — a guide written for the pleasure of knowing where things are.
Domfront rewards the unhurried. This guide was made in that spirit — an independent account of the perched medieval town of Domfront-en-Poiraie, in the southern Orne, and the Passais countryside that surrounds it. We write about the château and its ramparts, the Romanesque church below the hill, the bocage of hedgerows and orchards, and the poiré that carries the town's name.
What this is
A visitor's guide, plainly. Fifteen written guides, a map of the town and the Passais, and a gazetteer — an A-to-Z index to the sights of the town and its country. Everything here is organised around where things are: the rock, the river, and the orchards below. We describe real sights, real producers and the town itself in the third person, from public sources and our own visits.
What this is not
We are not the mairie, and we are not the office de tourisme. This is an independent guide, unaffiliated with the town or any official body. Where we point you toward a farm cellar or a table, we do so as enthusiasts, not agents — always check current hours and details directly.
We keep this guide evergreen. Seasons matter here — blossom, harvest, the low winter light — so we write about them; but you won't find dates on our own pages. The town is timeless, and we try to be.
With thanks
The guide is made with the help of local makers — the cellars, tables and craftspeople gathered under Friends of Domfront. Their support keeps the guide free to read and rooted in the place it describes.
